Why I love librarians, and win Last Rite!

This time last week, I was on my way to Houston for the Texas Library Association annual conference. I knew Texas was a big state. I used to live there. But I had no idea there were so many librarians there! This conference is HUGE, and I met a ton of fabulous librarians and readers. I also met some amazing authors, like Kristin Cashore, who helped me figure out which end of my straw hat was the front.

We had an awesome lunch with a great group of librarians, and I told them the same story you've heard here on my blog of how I started writing. It was for my daughter, who's a total bookworm. She spent her lunch period in junior high in the library and her librarian directed her to many excellent YA books.
I started reading them and loved them and decided to write my daughter a book for her birthday. So, it's really all because of my daughter's librarian that I ever wrote a book. Here's my WANTED poster from the event. Five extra contest entries to the first person who can tell me what's wrong with this poster. (Update: Cynthia was close on her second guess and Jackson got it, so I'm giving them both the 5 bonus entries. Answer: There are two Personal Demons covers, but the one on the right was never a cover--ebook or otherwise. It was an early cover comp that was never used.)

I hung out before the luncheon with some other Tor authors, including the lovely Kiki Hamilton (The Fairie Ring), Cherie Priest (Boneshaker, etc) and Orson Scott Card (Enders Game, etc)

I spent some time at the Tor booth where I found this:

I met one of my favorite ladies, Katie Bartow, the founder of Mundie Moms.
(sidenote: I also got to hang out with Katie's sidekick, Sophie, this weekend in Reno :p)

And, I met my lovely agent sister, Nikki Loftin, who's The Sinister Sweetness of Splendid Academy releases this summer from Razorbill!

I spoke on a panel with fabulous authors Stacey Kade, Jessica Warman and Charlie Higson, which I sadly don't have a picture of. A good time was had by all =)

But now I'm home and a day late posting my contest. So for those of you wanting another chance to win a signed copy of Last Rite, here it is! Just enter in comments to win signed copies of all this:

A runner up will receive a signed copy of Original Sin. Remember that entries do not carry over from week to week, so your name needs to appear in the comments below to enter for this giveaway. To enter, all you have to do is comment below and tell me if you go to your library for books. Remember that five extra contest entries go to the first person who can correctly tell me what's wrong with the wanted poster above. You must be 13 or older to enter. Extra entries can be accumulated as follows:

  3. Well, I think that the comma looks more like a decimal point than a comma. So is the reward $100,000 or $100.00 with an extra zero. Also the Dollar sign is behind, like Cynthia Garcia said.

I follow you on twitter and your blog. I also like the Personal Demons facebook page

If I get the pic question right than +5 to that for a total of +8

Thank you again for this awesome contest. I feel lucky this time!

  6. No right answer on the poster, by the way... It has nothing to do with the font, type, or layout of the poster. Hint: Look at the pictures.

  8. Is it that Frannie doesn't have "wavy, sandy blond hair" on the second cover (an international one I think?)? That instead she has straight dark hair?

  9. Second hint: There is no international cover on that poster.

  10. They put the ebook cover of Personal Demons on there. Add hey! I am a HUGE fan and have never seen this cover. Why does she have brown hair?

  12. I normally get my books from in the form of eBooks, but I used to go to the library to get my favorite books, the books on minerals and jewels, I've always loved rocks!

The poster has a picture of Personal Demons and another one of Personal Demons, NOT a picture of Original Sin, the covers look similar, BUT they showed two copies of the same book when I think they wanted to display the two books you currently have out.

The poster has another cover from the Original Sin,and not the original one.

  15. prepare yourself, there are NO such things as Libraries in my country T_________T only some universities have them and then the books there are only the academic thick-slash-my-throat-out-before-reading type...so nope I can't go to any libraries for books T_______________T I feel so weird, always, when talking to people about books and they tell me all about going to the library or having to return something to the library T_T I've never had that...

  19. if you go to your library for books. ---- I did when I lived in New Hampshire and when I was in Georgia in high school. Now that I am in college I find I have a hard time finding time to read and that I have a lot of books I own that I can read. (I wish I had more time!)

Remember that five extra contest entries go to the first person who can correctly tell me what's wrong with the wanted poster above.
The second cover is not the official cover for PD, and as you said it is not international so :)... (my guess is they should have put OS on there)

  21. I want to read Legend but not as bad as Last Rite... Extra good week of goodies!

Here's my weekly entry. I do not go to the library for books but I should because my addiction to reading is EXPENSIVE! My 95 year old grandma goes to the library every week.

My kids are starting to get addicted to reading as well so I definitely need to start going to the library. My 3.5 year old is always trying to steal my kindle.

  23. I love libraries. I can't afford to buy all the books that I want, so get some from the library. I live in a small town, so get to visit 3 local libraries in surronding area. I also have won copies of books for my local library and they have put them on the shelf for others to enjoy. I also belong to a couple of street teams and sometimes they send extra books. I also donate to the local library. They are very happy for that. I would love to win and read this book. You are a new author for me and always looking for new books to check out.

  24. I use the library a lot. The only time I don't use it is if I can't wait until they start carrying a new release or they have a long wait list for a book I really want to read. In those cases, I'll buy the book.
