A LITTLE TOO audiobooks!

Fun stuff! Harper released the audiobooks for the A LITTLE TOO series today! If you want to hear the samples, they're here on Audible!

This is super exciting for me. I remember when my first audiobooks released for my Personal Demons series. I got audition tapes and got to choose my demon, Luc, (who I will say was very demonic ;p). Then I got to hear his and the actress who read Frannie's interpretation of what I had
written. As an author, hearing someone do a dramatic reading of your work is enlightening. It makes you see where you could tighten things up, and where you might not have relayed exactly what it was you meant to. So, I'm looking forward to hearing Lexie, Hilary, and Sam come to life and tell me their stories.

Wow *deep breath*

I'm taking a second, now that A LITTLE TOO HOT is out in the world, to reflect back on the last year. It was one year ago last Friday, January 17th, that I woke up with Lexie in my head. She told me she thought she might be in love with her stepbrother, Trent. I grabbed my laptop and started typing, and by that night I had the first 10K words of A LITTLE TO FAR. A couple of days later, I shot my omnipotent uber-agent an email with the pitch and asked her if NA was a thing now. (She'd always said it wasn't, but she'd just sold Cora Carmack's LOSING IT to Harper the month before.) She emailed me back and said it was a thing, but that it was still a tough sale. I sent her the first 80 pages of ALTF, which she read and loved, and we agreed to try to sub it. A week later, I'd finished the first draft. We took a few weeks to clean it up, then subbed to editors. It went to my lovely editor at HarperCollins on Friday and on Tuesday we were speaking on the phone. By Thursday we had a pre-empt we were happy with and I had a crazy deadline schedule for the next two books in the series. And that was my year.

So, I find it sort of karmic that the final book in the series would publish exactly one year from when I sent the first feeler to my agent about the idea--a year and four days after I first opened a clean Word doc and started writing Lexie's story. It's been sort of a fairy tale year, and I've met so many awesome readers and fabulous authors--people who have turned into some of my closest friends. (I'm looking at you, Jay and Katy!)

It hasn't always been easy, but it's been wild in the best possible way. It's a ride that I wish could have lasted forever, but instead of looking back, I'm looking forward.

When I wrote A LITTLE TOO FAR, it was in the two weeks that my agent had a new young adult novel that I'd written in December. We put that on the back burner when things started happening with A LITTLE TOO FAR, but I finally had a chance to go back and clean that up before Christmas, and I'm hoping for good things there. I also have some fun new adult ideas knocking around in my head that I'm looking forward to getting on paper, so to speak, in the next few months. I've contributed to a really cool anthology coming out next month, FIFTY FIRST TIMES, with Jennifer L. Armentrout, Molly McAdams, Sophie Jordan and a whole bunch more of us. So, there's not much chance I'll stop writing. But...I will slow down a little. Life got a little crazy in the last half of last year, so I'm taking some time to enjoy my family and just breathe.

Thanks to all you readers who have been along for the ride. You're the reason I love my job. The notes and Tweets make all the insanity worth it. You are the absolute best! xxoxoxoox

The ALTF series boys and their music

So, guess what? A LITTLE TOO MUCH goes on sale in just four weeks! FOUR WEEKS! I love that Harper is getting these books out so fast and y'all don't have to wait months and months for the next books in the A Little Too Far series. So, today is a musical celebration of all three A Little Too Far novels. And you all know how I love my men, so they are the focus of my celebration.

Each of my characters has a musical inspiration. There's always one song that is their musical embodiment. And there's also a song that is the overriding theme of the entire novel. My musical tastes tend to be eclectic, so sometimes something blasting out of the car next to me at the stoplight will catch my ear. Or maybe it's actual elevator music. Or something that pops onto the radio while I'm mopping my kitchen floor. Or something emanating from the television during a football game. If it speaks to me, chances are it's going to end up in one of my books in one form or another.

So, my boys. In A LITTLE TOO FAR, we meet Trent and Alessandro, and one of them is the hero in A LITTLE TOO MUCH as well. My hero in A LITTLE TOO HOT (book 3, Jan 2014) is Harrison, and I can't wait for you to meet him. This weekend I was listening to my writing playlist on shuffle, and their three songs came up back to back to back. I laughed out loud as I was listening, because it struck me how different the songs are from one another. It got me thinking about my guys. They couldn't be much more different in nature, personality, and upbringing, and their songs reflect that.

So, let's start with Trent. Trent is a musician, and, as an artist, is sensitive in a more soulful way. He's got a bit of an wild streak, and tends to be a little impulsive, but he's not a "bad boy." Quite the opposite, really. He cares about people (especially Lexie) and, despite his string of women, he's just generally a stand up guy. In the acknowledgements for the book, I tell my readers that the overriding theme of ALTF is Lifehouse's "All In," but the song that shaped Trent is Rob Thomas' "Ever the Same," which really sums up Trent and Lexie's whole relationship. Whenever I watch this Youtube vid, I hear him singing this too her.

Alessandro, my Italian-French-American almost-priest, takes that path because he believes he has a lot to atone for and it's his only route to redemption. He has a huge heart and an enormous capacity for love, but he also believes he doesn't deserve to be loved. He's suffered immeasurable loss at the hands of others, and he's never totally come to terms with that loss. He's a tortured soul and, no matter what he does from here on out, he'll never be able to totally forgive himself for the wrongs he believes he's perpetrated on others. He's bound to forever suffer in silence, and the song that embodies his suffering is "My Sacrifice" by Creed.

And in A LITTLE TOO HOT we meet Harrison. Harrison is that sexy combination of sweet and tough, but he has his own demons. For the most part, he does a decent job of keeping them in check, but they drive him, and his need for revenge boils just below the surface of his cool-as-a-cucumber demeanor. Without giving too much away, I can tell you that things get interesting for Harrison when he meets a certain friend of Lexie's, and what happens from there, neither of them could have ever predicted. The song that shaped Harrision is "Don't Ya" by Brett Eldredge.


So...yeah. Three guys, three different personalities, and embodied by three very different songs. But I love them all, and hopefully, so will you =) Do you have songs you feel embody Trent or Alessandro? I'd love to hear what they are!

As we sway with the movement of the train, his body brushes against mine, and by the time we stop at Fiftieth, he’s pressed tight against me. There’s a palpable charge, like static electricity, with every subtle shift of his body against mine, and when the doors slide open, neither of us moves for a several beats of my pounding heart.

Finally, I have no choice.

“Hilary,” he says as I step away from him onto the platform, and that one word sounds like a prayer. I turn and his expression is guarded. He looks at me with pleading eyes, like there’s something more than my name he wanted me to hear. Like he just poured his heart out and he’s waiting for some response. But before I can figure out what those deep eyes are asking, the doors close, and a second later, he’s whisked off through the tunnel.

A LITTLE TOO FAR Character Week--Rome

Today is A LITTLE TOO FAR's birthday, and I'm so happy it's out there in the world for you all to read. So many lovely bloggers and Goodreads reviewers have already posted reviews. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to read! Initially, I was afraid to look. I've got stepbrother sex, and a tempted soon-to-be-priest--all the things that I KNEW were going to piss some people off. But here's the thing... People are reading and discovering all those things are not there just for "shock value." I didn't set out to write some scandalous, controversial book just to sell copies. I sat down with a character in my head. She seemed pretty cool to me, and she had a story to tell. I wrote it down. That's it.

I think the reason A LITTLE TOO FAR is getting such lovely reviews from readers is because everything in the story feels organic to Lexie's journey. I didn't have an agenda, and it never really occurred to me that people might consider what she goes through to be controversial, or over-the-top. My take-away from the reviews I've read is that the taboo doesn't read as taboo. It's just natural and authentic. I'm glad, because I LOVE Lexie, Trent, and Alessandro, and I'd hate for them to get lost in controversy or scandal. I want them to shine, just like the last character from A LITTLE TOO FAR, who I'm introducing you to today!

You've met Lexie, Trent, and Alessandro. Last but not least on A LITTLE TOO FAR Character Week is Rome! I set this novel in Rome for selfish reasons. I adore Rome, and was able to relive my time there in Lexie's Roman experience. Rome has a life of its own, which I tried to bring to life on the page in a way that would allow my readers to experience it even if you've never been.

A LITTLE TOO FAR Character Week--Lexie

You've met Lexie's boys, Trent and Alessandro. Today is Lexie's turn on ALTF Character Week. What can I say about my lovable narrator...?

Lexie is in a pretty serious dilemma. She's slept with Trent, her best friend...who also happens to be her stepbrother. (I mean, look at this picture and tell me you wouldn't sleep with him too!) She knows it will likely not only destroy their friendship, something that means more to Lexie than anything else she possesses, but also their family if they were to be discovered. So she does what any normal twenty-year-old would do: she runs away. Because, luckily for Lexie, she's managed to score a scholarship for a year abroad and will be spending her junior year studying art history in ROME!

But, the thing is, Lexie seems to be a magnet for off-limits men. She goes to confess her sins with the hope of not burning in hell for all eternity, and meets the very easy-on-the-eyes soon-to-be priest, Alessandro Moretti. As they become closer, Lexie discovers Alessandro's dark past and the reasons serving the Church is so important to him. She stuffs down her attraction to him, knowing nothing could ever happen between them. ...So when it does, she's more surprised than anyone.

Being with one could destroy her family. Being with the other could destroy his life.

So, what's a girl to do?

A LITTLE TOO FAR Character Week--Trent

Yesterday you met Alessandro. The other gorgeous guy in A LITTLE TOO FAR is Trent, Lexie's stepbrother.

I've seen a lot of comments that people aren't interested in reading A LITTLE TOO FAR because the stepbrother thing creeps them out. That's their prerogative, and I totally respect that. But the thing here is, Lexie and Trent were attracted to each other before their parents married. In Lexie's words:

"If we’d just met, like, at school or the mall or been living anywhere other than under the same roof, then there’d be nothing wrong with our being together."

Trent and Lexie have a deep and profound connection, and if there's one thing Trent knows more than anything, it's that he and Lexie are soul mates. He only feels whole when he's with her. He's spent years compensating for how he feels by distracting himself with other women. But he's not your typical womanizing man-whore.

Page 21:

I pull away and look at him. “Have you ever cheated on anyone?”

He contemplates that for a second. “I’m not going to say I haven’t pissed a lot of girls off, but I prefer to do it honorably. If it’s just a hookup, I make sure they know that before anything happens, and if I’m with someone and I want to hook up with someone new, I break up with the one I’m with first.”

I roll my eyes. “So chivalrous.”

“Say what you will, but I’ve never been anything less than straight up with any girl I’ve ever been with. I’ve never lied or gone behind anyone’s back. Ever.”

But things get complicated when they finally act on the desire they've both been suppressing. Lexie leaves to go to Rome for a year, and Trent has to sort through the emotional wreckage. For him, that means finding a distraction, and this time, it's Lexie's best friend, Sam. But try as he will, he can't stop thinking about Lexie. And when Lexie tells him about Alessandro, as always, he's her best friend:

A LITTLE TOO FAR Character Week--Alessandro

In A LITTLE TOO FAR there are men. Gorgeous men. Two of them. And both are very off-limits. Lexie finds herself in a position she never dreamed, having to decide between the two, knowing that choosing either one will have dire consequences.

Trent is Lexie's stepbrother, confidant, and best friend. We'll get up close and personal with him tomorrow. But today, we meet Alessandro.

Alessandro is the American son of a French mother and an Italian father. He's also a transitional deacon in the Catholic church, months away from his ordination as a priest. Yesterday, I gave you a glimpse into Alessandro's past, and it's dark. He's chosen the path he believes will atone for his sins, but he's still tortured by a past he can't outrun. In Lexie, he sees passion. He sees good. And, much to his dismay, he sees a possible future. Pledging his life to the Church is his best chance at redemption. He believes the Church is the only thing that can control his dark side. But is it worth giving up his only chance at true happiness?

Is there another path to redemption? That's what Alessandro needs to sort out before it's too late.

Alessandro, 9/11, and everything after

I wrote a book. In that book are characters. My characters are 100% alive in my head. They've lived lives and had experiences that shape them as people. It's rare that I know a character's back-story until they tell it to me as I'm writing them. And one of my characters took me somewhere I never imagined I'd go, straight into the middle of 9/11.

Everyone remembers where they were twelve years ago today. We'd moved from Boston to California a few years earlier so, being on the west coast, I woke up to the horror. We knew people who worked in the World Trade Center, but, thankfully, the only thing we lost in the attacks was a birthday gift. My daughter's birthday is September 16th and my mother-in-law had mailed her birthday gift from Cape Cod on the 10th. It never arrived, and the post office confirmed that it would have been trucked up to Logan Airport (Boston) the evening of the 10th and put on the first commercial jet heading to California in the morning.

I can't even watch the video of the planes crashing into the towers and the towers falling. I still get that cold finger up my spine when I think about it. My heart goes out to everyone who lost someone that horrible day. In addition to all the brave first responders and the loved ones we lost, some of us lost our sense of security.

But then, something amazing happened. We all took comfort in each other. We band together with our neighbors and became stronger as individuals and a nation. In all the horror, that was the gift. In our, "me first" society, people seemed to remember that it's not all about "me." For a short time, all the selfish seemed to run out of people and compassion replaced it.

So, on this twfelth anniversary of one of the worst days in our nation's history, I hope we can all remember what it felt like to care about others more than ourselves. If we can find a little of that in ourselves everyday, we can change the world.

Some people say they don't put much stock in them. Others say they buy books because of them. I fall into the latter group. If I love an author's writing, and they say a book is worth reading, I'm much more likely to check it out.

AHHHH! Here it is! There aren't even words for how excited I am about this cover! The HarperCollins/William Morrow art department are my very favorite people at the moment (along with my seriously cool editor, my fabulous publicist, and the digital marketing maven, who did the fun widget).

I love this book. It was a whirlwind to write, and Lexie took me on a wild ride in the process. I hope all y'all have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.
