Fun news!

Next Thursday, Carrie Vaughn and I will be speaking at the County of Los Angeles Public Library's Reader Advisory Workshop. I'm told they expect 80-100 librarians to be there. The topic is, Beyond Twilight: The Secret Lives of Paranormals. I can't even tell you how much fun putting together this presentation has been.

And, like serendipity, Personal Demons was just selected as a Library Journal Fall Firsts pick. This is, like, so cool!

I am in my library constantly. I know my library card number by heart. (And it's long!) There is nothing that makes me happier than the thought of Personal Demons being in libraries where everyone can enjoy it. So, I was THRILLED to make this list. (And my Booklist review didn't suck either :p) It's these reviews and lists that librarians all over the country look to when making purchases for their collections.

Thank you Library Journal and Booklist for bailing my butt out and giving Personal Demons some credibility. And, if you're a librarian, thanks for being such a great resource for readers like me!

So, a question. Do you use your library? If so, what were the last five books you took out? Have you ever ended up buying a book after taking it out from your library? Okay, I guess that was really three questions. O_O

  1. Congratulations! That is awesome. And I wish I could go to the workshop and check out your talk, but you know, thousands of miles separate us and I somehow lost my jet pack. ;)

The NOPL is not that great since Katrina, but I do download the occasional e-book to my nook. I donate books to the local branch all the time, though.

  2. Congratulations!

Yes, I use my library all the time.

    CHAINS
    END OF DAYS
    CRAVE
    GIDEON
    EARTH (the book)

So many times I've bought the book after using the library. The library is where I go to see if I will like the book/series enough to own it.

  3. That talk sounds like so much fun! I wish I lived on the west coast =( Good luck!

Congrats on making the Fall Firsts list! I do love libraries, but my local one realllly sucks. I think I'm on the verge of having more books than they do. Seriously. But yes, I have bought books after borrowing them from the library =) I'm a big re-reader, so if I like a book I want my own copy to read over and over and over and overrr. I'm not entirely sure what the last 5 I took out were...I know there was The Alchemist, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, aaand....yeah, that's all I can remember. It's been a while =)

  4. Ooh, have fun! I got to know Carrie while she was down here for WorldCon, and she's gorgeous. (Tell her I saw a Superb Fairywren the other day, then watch her giggle.)

I lived in the library as a kid, and though I buy a lot more books these days, I'm still there frequently. The last five were all on design and renovation, since we're about to start making our place more liveable. The last fiction book I borrowed there was The Book Thief.

  5. Congrats on your news!

Hopefully my local library will get a copy of Personal Demons soon. ^_^

I love my local library! I'm there at least 3 times a month. Over my last two trips, I checked out: Slaughterhouse Five, The King's Rose, The Dead-Tossed Waves, City of Ashes, City of Glass, and Inkspell.

I'm sure I have bought books after getting them from the library, but none come to mind right now.

  6. I use my library constantly. Nowadays, I'm most often checking out audiobooks to read along with, but I've always, ALWAYS been a strong advocate of libraries.

The last five books I checked out (not including audiobooks) were...

    Bloodhound - Tamora Pierce
A Wizard of Mars - Diane Duane
The Mortal Instruments Trilogy - Cassandra Clare
    Silver Borne - Patricia Briggs
And Another Thing... - Eoin Colfer

As for my purchasing habits, of course I buy books after reading them from the library. You never know the quality of the book/item you'll get from the library, and if I enjoyed something well enough, I want to make sure I get a good copy!

  7. Congrats! I'm so glad Personal Demons is on the list of fall picks! It totally deserves it!

I LOVE my library. I volunteer there, I check out piles of books... If I can find a book at my library, I typically won't buy it since I'm not much of a re-reader.

The last 5 books I checked out? *looks around* Dark Song by Gail Giles, The Crowded Shadows by Celine Kiernan, Tantalize by Cynthia Leitch Smith, Intertwined by Gena Showalter, and Girl in the Arena by Lise Haines.
I tend to go in and browse around both the YA section and the adult SFF section.

  8. Congrats - that's great! Seeing this reminds me to request Personal Demons for my local library in Los Angeles.

I check out books all the time- my latest check-outs are Torment by Lauren Kate, Insatiable by Meg Cabot, and the Pretty Little Liars series by Sara Shepard.

And I do purchase books that I've been particularly impressed with.

  9. We live outside the city limits so it would cost EACH of us over $100 each year to get a library card to our public library. This saddens me to no end. My Mother In Law figured out how to get a library card via our local Community College for free that we can use at the public library. Nifty huh? But unfortunately, our library was built a few years ago at a cost of over $7 million dollars. The then Mayor wanted to leave his mark on the city before leaving. That $7 mill did not include new books. The books in the library are old and very outdated. Sadly, they rarely ever have the newest and greatest books on the shelves. I would most def buy less books if I was able to get them from our library. Good for me, bad for the Authors. But this also means that I am not able to read all the books I would like to read.

I would honestly rather donate books to the school library than I would the public library. It is not the type of library I remember loving as a child. It is very sad indeed!

Not only do I buy books that I have found in the library but I also buy books for my children that get from the library that they love. We have a small library in our house of books that they love!

Congratulations on making to the library shelves. I am hoping someday our library will catch up to the times and update their selections with all the great new books that are going unread due to poor politics within the city!

    Thank you!

  10. Congratulations!!!
I love my local public library and use it all the time! The last five books checked out (last week...) are:
    The Lost Hero - Riordan
    Buddha Boy - Kathe
    Illyria - Hand
    Wild Romance - Schama
    Foundling - Cornish
And I, too, have my library card number memorized. Secretly placing holds while at work is so much easier if I don't have to dig out my library card. ;)
